5 Destinations to Celebrate New Year's Eve

Whether you’re looking for a couple’s retreat, fun for all the family or somewhere exciting as a solo traveller, there’s a place for everyone this New Year’s Eve. If want to relax and watch the fireworks, party the night away or curl up next to a fireplace, there’s plenty to do to suit everyone’s tastes in the buzzing capitals of Europe.

So, with that mind, InsuraTrip Travel Insurance have put together their top 5 UK and European destinations where you can ring in New Year’s Eve in style!

(1) Edinburgh - Scotland

If you’re a UK native then one of the best places to spend New Year’s Eve is in Edinburgh, Scotland.  One of the biggest street parties in the UK is thrown in celebration of Hogmanay, so, if this year you want sparkling fireworks, live music, lots of entertainment and a vibrant atmosphere, Edinburgh is the place to be.

There’s fun for all the family during Hogmanay. You can participate in the procession and dress up as a Viking for something a little bit different to the norm or if you want to get the kids in bed before midnight then there is a range of daytime activities such as the ‘Baby Loves Disco’ for those aged up to 6 years old which includes face painting, dancefloor games, a play area and crafts. For fun for all ages, head over to Bairns Afore for the afternoon where adults and kids can both enjoy live music and a firework display ending early evening, allowing you plenty of time to get back to your accommodation before it starts getting too busy.

(2) Venice, Italy

The ‘City of Water’ is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. With its winding streets and picture-perfect canals and scenery, it is arguably at its best during December when it is just a little bit chilly. This destination calls for a long weekend away to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the delicious local cuisine and to visit the tourist spots along the way.

If you’re travelling as a couple, start or end your New Year’s Eve by embracing in a ‘lovers kiss’ in Piazza San Marco, where hundreds if not thousands of couples gather for this local tradition. Then, spend your evening watching the fireworks with views from Riva degli Schiavoni or bundle up warm and jump on a gondola and enjoy a ride around the town while the fireworks are lighting up the sky. Outstandingly romantic!

While there has been recent flooding in Venice, the local authority states that it is still a safe destination to travel to and it is business as usual for local transportation and tourist attractions.

(3) Prague, Czech Republic

If you’re looking for Party central then Prague is the place for you. Almost every bar is celebrating in some way or another, bringing a real party atmosphere unanimously across the whole City.

Fireworks, champagne, entertainment, balls, themed evenings, dj’s and more, Prague has everything you could want and more at your fingertips no matter how you like to celebrate and spend your time.

Head over to Charles Bridge and nab yourself a space to watch the fireworks or take a trip to the Old Town Square and join the other partygoers enjoying the entertainment.

(4) Madeira, Portugal

Offering one of the largest firework display in the world, Madeira is the perfect place to visit if you want a trip full of glitz and glamour. Starting New Year’s celebrations on the 30th December, many locals and tourists find themselves dancing and partying until the night of the following day!

The dress code for these evenings tend to be formal giving men an excuse to dust off their tuxedos and the ladies to show off their ball gowns.

If partying all day and night isn’t your thing or dressing up in your best, then plenty of local bars and restaurants will be offering alternative themed evenings and it’s the perfect escape for some last-minute winter sun!

(5) Berlin, Germany

It’s no surprise being the party capital of Europe, Berlin puts on a cracking New Year’s Eve celebration!

One of Europe’s best street parties takes place at the Brandenburg Gate, with live music, food, entertainment and drinks all the way to the Victory Column which is just over 1.5 miles away. At midnight, watch the fireworks and then party in to the evening until the early morning in one or all of Berlin’s many clubs.
